Reading Nook Opening

03-02-2017 to 03-02-2017 – Join us for the opening of the new Reading Nook exhibit to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and the love of reading! The Reading Nook features several iconic pieces from the museum’s original Beck Street location that have been re-imagined to create the perfect reading space. It is also home to the new Take a Book, Leave a Book lending library in partnership with Salt Lake City Public Library and KUED PBS Kids. Bring in a book for another family to enjoy in exchange for a new-to-you book to take home!

Enjoy readings of Dr. Seuss books in the Reading Nook, a full schedule of Seussville activities throughout the museum, and special appearances of The Cat in the Hat from 11 am – 5 pm!

Tad Calcara and New Deal Swing Orchestra

03-02-2017 to 03-02-2017 – Tad Calcara has been principal clarinet of the Utah Symphony since 1999. He began studying piano at age five and clarinet at 12. Mr. Calcara studied clarinet at the Manhattan School of Music, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. In addition he attended summer music festivals at Tanglewood, Aspen, and Music Academy of the West. Prior to his appointment with the Utah Symphony he performed with the New World Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, and the Grand Tetons Music Festival Orchestra.

Tad Calcara, expert on all things swing, brings his big band, New Deal Swing, and singer Melissa Pace Tanner to the Gallivan Center to celebrate the famous 1937 Benny Goodman concert at the Paramount Theater that brought Times Square traffic to a halt and kicked off the swing era. Tad and his band will recreate the songs and vibe of that famous day. Daynes Music brings in a Steinway.

03-02-2017 to 03-02-2017 – Turkuaz is a 9-piece “Powerfunk” outfit from Brooklyn, NY, whose modern take on the classic funk sound has established them as leaders in the funk revolution that’s currently taking place in the genre. Blending elements of Pop, R&B, and Soul with their distinct aggressive funk core, Turkuaz sounds like the musical love child of Sly & the Family Stone and Talking Heads.

03-03-2017 to 03-03-2017 – Talk, Sing, Read, Write, Play with renowned Children’s Author Rosemary Wells at the County Library.

Participate in Hand in Hand discussion with Rosemary, parents, caregivers, teachers, librarians and enjoy early learning tips and tricks. Additionally, on day two, children and families can enjoy Hand in Hand play, storytime, crafts, music and movement.
